Phillies Sign Sixth-Round Pick

Philadelphia Phillies sixth-round pick George Klassen reportedly signed with the organization on Tuesday, per MLB.com.

Klassen, who pitched for the University of Minnesota, reportedly signed a slightly above slot deal for $300,000 (the slot value for his selection, No. 193, was $282,900).

The new of Klassen’s signing came the same day that first-round pick Aidan Miller reportedly signed for $3.1 million.

Klassen, a right-hander, has a fastball that can reach 102 miles per hour on the radar gun.

As a redshirt sophomore, he went 1-7 with a 5.72 ERA, making 14 appearances (13 starts) as the Saturday starter. He struck out 49 in 53.1 innings, walking 47 with 36 earned runs. He allowed just 49 hits as opponents hit just .222 off of him. He went five-or-more innings five times, including three Big Ten starts.

The 2020 graduate of Port Washington High School was Perfect Game’s No. 1 pitcher and No. 2 overall player in Wisconsin when he came out of high school.

Philadelphia has a bonus pool of $5.185 million to pay its draft picks. They must sign all of their selections by 5 p.m. eastern on July 25.
