Mike Tomlin breaks down what he looks for during rookie minicamp
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Mike Tomlin just got a long look at the newest Steelers, with all the draft picks and undrafted free agents gathering together for a three-day minicamp.

But did you ever wonder what coaches look for in an orientation like this? The rookies don’t know the playbooks. No matter how much they’ve studied and worked out, they still don’t know.

Tomlin told reporters what he notices when everyone is all together for the first time. To summarize, it’s a whole lot of “hows.”

“I’m looking for a lot of things to be quite honest with you,” said the Steelers head coach. “How people take in information. How they retain information. Some physical things, how their body works and levels of conditioning? Things that are really critical in terms of getting to know these guys and building a program individually for them and for them to get ready for Latrobe.”

And at the end of it all, the first-year players gathered together for a group photo. You’re only a rookie once, so you need to commemorate it. The Steelers social media team then shared the photo with fans. Take a look:

Tomlin did do some other, non-rookie business this weekend. He added at least one player to the training camp roster for Latrobe. Once camp closed, the Steelers announced that they had signed defensive back Anthony Averett to a one-year contract.

Averett tried out for a roster spot over the weekend. But he’s no rookie. The former Alabama starter is a six-year veteran. The Ravens selected him in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The Steelers are his fourth team since Baltimore. He’s also spent time with the Raiders, 49ers and Lions. Last season, he spent a month in Detroit on the Lions’ practice squad.

Everyone at the camp got to check out UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. They practiced indoors and outside. Plus, they shared a meal at Acrisure Stadium.

Afterwards, Tomlin complimented the rookies again.

“Appreciative of the group’s attention,” he said. “(We’ve) got a lot of work ahead of us. But they appear to have come in relatively good shape as a collective in bringing the proper appropriate attitude to start chewing on some of these things.”
