NFL Analyst Gets Brutally Honest On Cowboys Signing Ezekiel Elliott
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys have welcomed back a familiar face in their running back corps. After weeks of speculation, Ezekiel Elliott’s return to the Cowboys is now official, marking a reunion with the team he has called home since entering the league, until his departure last season.

From a sentimental standpoint, this move carries a lot of warmth, as Elliott has been a beloved and respected figure within the organization.

However, in terms of on-field impact, this signing doesn’t appear to significantly shift the balance.

That’s the sentiment echoed by NFL analyst Greg Cosell in a recent appearance on The Ross Tucker podcast.

Cosell expressed doubts about Elliott’s current ability to perform as a starting running back, citing his recent form with the New England Patriots and his final season in Dallas.

“I don’t think he is good enough to be a starting RB based on last year or even his last year in Dallas…can’t imagine they go into the season thinking Zeke Elliott is their #1 RB.”

Cosell questioned whether the Cowboys truly view Ezekiel Elliott as a legitimate RB1 option heading into the season, especially given the perceived weaknesses and lack of depth in their running back room.

Despite several opportunities to address the running back position, the Dallas Cowboys opted not to pursue prominent names like D’Andre Swift, Josh Jacobs, Gus Edwards, Austin Ekeler, Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, or Aaron Jones. They also refrained from exploring a trade for Joe Mixon.

Instead, they have opted to re-sign a player they previously let go due to declining performance, now one year older.

This decision raises concerns for a team that had hinted at an aggressive offseason strategy.
